EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE “At the age of six, I wanted to be a cook. At seven, I wanted to be Napoleon. My ambition has been growing steadily ever since.” – Salvadore Dali

W

hile I have no fundamental rhyme nor reason to have come to the following conclusion (only my own hiccups with staying the course), I suspect it is around this time of the year that we get the speed wobbles with some of our New Year's Resolutions. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware many New Year's Resolutions have given rise to powerful changes worthy of great celebration, but I'd hazard a guess that some of our “I must…”, “I will…”, “I promise to…” declarations at the stroke of midnight on 1 January are made in jest with a little bit of Dutch Courage flowing through our veins. Pre-planned or spontaneous, what drives these commitments is a sense of ambition. Okay, yes also sometimes a glass (or four?) of champagne. But it's the ambition that I find incredibly intriguing. A return to first principles tells us ambition is 'a strong desire to achieve', although ultimately, ambition looks and feels different to each and every one of us. Despite its subjective nature, ambition is a very unifying concept in my mind. Having reflected on its meaning quite a lot lately, I believe it is the common denominator between every story we are fortunate to tell through Metropol Magazine. A number of friends I have spoken to lately have shared stories of achievement that remind me nothing of significance ever comes easy. It is all too easy to look at the movers and shakers making their mark and assume their success was written into the stars and fate dealt them a generous hand. Not so. Ambition can be master and maker; it can also drive us crazy at times. I'm a great believer in every day presenting a new opportunity to try and try again. Growing up the slogan in our household was ‘never give up’. My Dad would call this out from the side-lines as I ran track in primary school, or when he dropped me off for exams at university. Admittedly, I would cringe sometimes when Dad said it, but do you know what? His wise words have stayed with me all my life and always will. They have been a faithful companion to me during the toughest times because they go right to the heart of what ambition really stands for – perseverance. Metropol loves to hear and write about stories of ambition from all walks of life. In turning the pages of today's issue, keep ambition in mind and enjoy the stories in this context. Wishing you all a happy and ambitious Easter – even if ambition for you means eating lots of chocolate. I'm with you!

OUT & ABOUT

Love for the written word Editor of Canterbury Build, Melinda Collins, sits down with Metropol Magazine's new Editor Kate Pierson to discuss her career evolution and love for the written word.

S

he didn't always plan to be a journalist, but as Metropol Magazine's new Editor Kate Pierson explains, writing was always in her DNA. “All of my family have a natural passion for all that the written word offers,” Kate explains. “Reading was always compulsory in our house and until the time I could read myself, my Dad read to me every night – all of the classics. It was my Dad that nurtured my love of writing and encouraged me to keep exploring vocabulary. “As a child, I found solace in words and derived great comfort in storytelling. As a result, writing became something I held onto throughout my life because it came more naturally to me than anything else.” That love of words saw Kate enrol in a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media and Communications at the University of Canterbury yet, despite achieving this with First Class Honours, getting that first foot in the door wasn't easy. “By the time I had finished university – unfortunately at the start of the Global Financial Crisis – I realised journalism was what I wanted to do. Although the New Zealand economy seemed fairly buoyant at the time, the media landscape had taken a big hit and the jobs simply weren't being advertised.” Testament to her determination, Kate spent two years working on a voluntary basis for a number of online publications, while also maintaining a full-time paid job, before she got her break. Working full-time as a journalist for a nationwide publishing company producing a number of publications, Kate secured covers with heavy hitters including Keith

Quinn, Trelise Cooper and Liam Bowden of Deadly Ponies before moving into earthquake recovery communications for the Waimakariri District Council. She continued to nurture her interest in writing with freelance projects. “Working in earthquake recovery was a career defining move. It was a unique situation where I was living and breathing work 24-7. I would go home at the end of the day and work carried on because I was living the experience,” she says. “It made the job infinitely more personal as I could relate to what everyone was going through and it brought a unique level of empathy into the work I was doing at the time.” While she remains “eternally grateful” for the opportunity, after a couple of years in the demanding role, Kate felt she was no longer fulfilling her potential and made the decision to travel, while

continuing to write for New Zealand publications. “New Zealand is a young country, with a distinct identity that really sets as apart. Despite visiting developed and developing countries, having met people who have profoundly changed my life, there was always the sense that nothing could quite beat New Zealand in my eyes and mind,” she says. “In coming back to New Zealand I was fortunate enough to bring with me an amazing partner, Declan, who has always felt what I should be pursuing is my love of words. That reignited in me the desire to chase what I knew deep down I always wanted to do.” Kate doesn't like to talk about herself. It's a humility seldom seen in the competitive media industry. And, despite its rarity, it's a quality which lends itself well to a role which, at its core, is about showcasing the

best of what Canterbury has to offer and ensuring this focus is not lost. “The opportunity to work with an institution like Metropol is significant. The former Editor left a strong legacy and it's a publication where you know people have a vested interest in what you're doing and how you're going about it, which pushes you to do the best possible job you can do.” “I've been in an incredibly fortunate position to have the sense of unwavering support and love of my Dad, my partner, friends and colleagues. Having not had a lot of on-ground support while being based in London alone for two years, it has been the most incredibly overwhelming experience to come back to people really rooting for me. “I am eternally grateful to be surrounded by people that want to see me and the magazine succeed.”

Supported by the SVA, University of Canterbury and the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association (RSA), the pledge is a way to honour the ANZAC spirit while also giving back to the community. As of mid-March, Serve for New Zealand had seen 231 hours pledged by 103 individuals, and the generosity of spirit continues to grow by the day. From adopting a granny/grandpa; visiting a local retirement village; helping someone with their garden through to offering to help with the poppy collection for your local RSA, there are so many ways you can show your commitment to your community. You now have just one calendar month to pledge your time. It's one of the greatest gifts you can offer those around you. Kicking it

in Christchurch

Judging by the relationship New Zealand has with rugby (in all its various manifestations); one could say the game is pretty much in our DNA.

W

hether you consider yourself a bona fide fanatic, or someone that likes to participate in the extra-curricular activities (bevvies and bites), there is a significant addition to the Christchurch sports scene just on the horizon. Enter: The NRL (aka, National Rugby League). On Saturday 14 May 2016, AMI Stadium will come alive with the Penrith Panthers bringing its Round 10 home game against the New Zealand Warriors. This is the first time Christchurch has seen an NRL game since 2010. Event Director Justin Wallace who has been spearheading the initiative is justly proud of

OUT & ABOUT

The return of the NRL to Christchurch is certainly a coup, but in fact, it's much greater than just the game itself.

the achievement, which required a number of Trans-Tasman trips and negotiation with multiple stakeholders. Christchurch traditionally has had a very strong appetite for rugby league. Over the last 2.5 years, we have been negotiating alongside our partners at the Christchurch City Council, Canterbury Rugby League and Christchurch Airport, among others, to bring the game home. Needless to say, the NRL is a juggernaut of an organisation. We are fortunate in a way that it has taken this time to co-ordinate as it has given our city the time it's needed to get back on its feet. This in turn lifted the con dence of the NRL that it was the right decision to make. The return of the NRL to Christchurch is certainly a coup, but in fact, it's much greater than just the game itself. We have negotiated a programme where the Panthers will engage in the community over four years with a number of grassroots initiatives coaching clinics including high performance clinics for elite juniors and junior skill clinics for the general and wider community. We are motivated to provide inspiration to the community and we want to help improve lifestyles and wellbeing. Our key partners are

going to help us deliver those outcomes. This four-year contract will help us make a real di erence in our community and we have a lot of support and some very excited people in Christchurch. The plan of action from now until kick-o and beyond is as fast-paced as the game itself. An o cial gala dinner will set the tone on Thursday 12 May when there is an opportunity to rub shoulders with players from both teams and VIP guests including Penrith legend, Royce Simmons, Sir Peter Leitch, Frank Endacott and Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel. A charity auction will take place with all proceeds going to Canterbury Rugby League to raise money for Junior Rugby League. On the day of the game prior to the 5pm kick-o (a strategic move designed to ensure it is a family event ) there will be three junior games from 4.30pm, a Guard of Honour formed by the juniors, and a junior club relay, which is currently looking for sponsors to o er $1000 to the winning club. The winner of the club relay will also get to take the game ball home. Tickets are available at www.ticketek.co.nz starting from $29. If you are interested in sponsoring the junior club relay, contact Justin Wallace at Justin@enthdegree.co.nz

PEACE OF MIND WITH PROPERTY By Cheryl Colley

“Buying a first home can be very stressful,” says Caroline Davey, Director and Solicitor with the law practice, Pier Law. “People are bombarded with so much information and so many documents they most likely have never seen before.

“A

t Pier Law, we have a great deal of experience in the provision of conveyancing advice, especially to first home buyers and can relieve much of that stress. Personally, I get tremendous satisfaction from helping people realise their dreams of owning their own home.” Caroline explains that help is available for potential first home buyers who may not have saved the cash required for a deposit. “Under the KiwiSaver first home withdrawal scheme, people may be able to put some of their KiwiSaver savings towards a first home and under the Housing New Zealand Home Start Grant, they may be able to get a grant towards their first home.” The eligibility criteria around these schemes are quite complex and the

Specialising in managing inner city residential apartments and townhouses in Christchurch in the middle to upper level bracket

applications take time to complete and be considered. This is where legal advice is crucial. “At Pier Law we like to meet with first home buyers early in their search for a property. “We can then work through the timelines with them for applying for funding under the two schemes and help them with all the necessary paperwork before a sale and purchase contract becomes unconditional. We are pretty hands-on in giving assistance, and for us, that is very enjoyable.” Pier Law welcomes enquiries from potential first home buyers who may be considering applying for funding. Phone the team on 366 5540 and arrange an appointment at any of the three offices Styx Mill, Kaiapoi or New Brighton.

avid Bowie's sixth sense that his next 'destination' wasn't going to be boring was spot on. It turns out he's coming here - to the Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) in Christchurch in fact. Okay, okay – it's not quite the man himself (that would be eerie, wouldn't it?), but an all-star cast is going to bring the Bowie magic with unprecedented musical force. On 19 April, Bowie: Waiting in the Sky – Honouring the Starman will explode onto the stage at ITR featuring Eddie Rayner (Split Enz); Finn Andrews (The Veils); Jordan Luck (Jordan Luck Band); Alastair Riddell (Space Waltz); Zaine Griff (The Human Instinct) and introducing Olympia and Skyscraper Stan.

OUT & ABOUT

ACTING OUT Christchurch community theatre group Elmwood Players has an exciting year of performances ahead. “Our first scheduled play to be staged in April is the critically-acclaimed, hard-hitting English comedy Jumpy by April de Angelis”, says Garry Thomas who will be directing the play.

G

arry explains that Jumpy revolves around Hilary, an anguished north London heroine who has made it to 50 - “I don't look 50. I don't act 50. I could get away with … 43?” and with not nearly enough to show for it. Her ever-texting teenage daughter is in a state of perpetual, highly sexed rebellion, her marriage has sagged into severe disrepair, and her worthy job on a local 'reading support' unit is falling prey to the cuts. “Three of April de Angelis' best-known plays, of which Jumpy is one, have contemporary English settings and focus on middle-class women as the lead characters. Jumpy comes draped in cheeky comedy, but at its heart is about darker matters, especially loss - loss of principles, loss of self in the role of motherhood, loss of love and loss of control over a child. “It's also a very fast-paced play with 18 short scenes and snappy dialogue. Anna Willows, who plays the main character Hilary, is on stage for every scene, so she is going to be very busy.”

'A-LIST' ASPIRATIONS By Lydia Truesdale

You don't need to be famous to look famous. There are several things you can do to add a little 'A-list' to any outfit. We've put together some tips to help you face autumn/winter 2016 in style. The '3 piece rule' This is a fail-safe fashion move that anyone can pull off, and it works especially well in autumn/winter. The '3 piece rule' usually combines two basic pieces with a statement piece layered overtop. The combination of black skinny jeans, a black top, and an oversized/lengthy vest or jacket is popular right now. Accessorise away Accessories are the perfect final touch to an outfit, and generally elevate a look to the next level. Simple, feminine jewellery is the way to go if you're rocking bold clothing, but if you're more pared-back with your attire then choose sparkly, chunky or colourful pieces to draw in the eye. Co-ordinating the shoes and bag is an easy way to achieve unity, and if there's one accessory you should splash out on, it's a decent pair of designer sunglasses. Belt up Never underestimate the power of a waist belt. It's an ideal way to accentuate your curves and add shape to an outfit, which is especially appreciated during the cooler months when the thicker textiles tend to steer silhouettes towards the androgynous. Trending right now are svelte belts – anything between skinny and mid-width. Show some shoulder Revealing the shoulder is a trend that has developed over time. The offthe-shoulder look elegantly exposes the neckline, but for an edgy and more modern approach, try the shoulder cut-out trend. This is a subtle way to show skin in winter, and with the help of a coat to throw on and off, the look is made practical. Turtle neck time The turtle neck – people tend to either hate or love it. Right now, it's mostly the latter. This look is being rocked by celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, and the timing couldn't be better for us because it's also the perfect way to keep warm.

GET IT TWISTED By Kate Pierson

Things are getting twisted when it comes to hair this season, with fashionistas flirting up a storm with the trusty, eternally fashionable braid.

The braid is an opportunity to push the boundaries.

T

he best thing is that tradition isn't the be all and end all with this style. Granting style mavens' carte blanche to mix things up thanks to its versatile, chameleon like nature, the braid is an opportunity to push the boundaries and, better yet, stands the test of time even if you toss and turn in your sleep. It's a durable look to say the least! There's a particular style of braid - The Fishtail that's really tugging at heartstrings right now, which channels a beautiful bohemian look that can be preened and primped to perfection. You can also afford to style it a little rough around the edge for a more relaxed aesthetic. Unless you consider yourself an expert, or a particularly obedient pupil when it comes to the school of YouTube, hit up your hairdresser for the ins and outs of how to rock the socks off this style. If you want to experiment, try a braid headband, a single braid, twin braids or even Princess Leia braids (Who? Just Google it!) as there are no hard and fast rules about which braid is ruling the style roost this season.

LUSCIOUS LOCKS Let's face it – we put our hair through a lot, and it deserves decent treatment in return. L'Oréal Professionnel has released a “game-changing” product range and SalonZBD on Kilmore Street is one of a select few salons to offer it.

T

he L'Oréal Pro Fiber restore programme is what you'd call 'science savvy'. Its key ingredient - the APTYL 100 molecular complex - literally charges hair follicles from the inside out. The positively charged APTYL 100 is applied to the (negatively charged) hair shaft, and is then reactivated at home and recharged for up to four to six weeks using specially formulated shampoo, conditioner and masque products. There are three Pro Fiber treatment plans, which each target different hair type or conditions. One of SalonZBD's licensed L'Oréal Colour expert's will conduct a consultation before each treatment to determine the most effective plan for maximised results.

The key ingredient literally charges hair follicles from the inside out.

SalonZBD owner, Reece Unahi, is determined to offer customers the best care by keeping up-to-date with the latest research and development, ensuring the team keeps expanding its skills, and creating discounted packages. SalonZBD is planning a trip to the Hair Expo in Melbourne in June, and is currently offering a package on its website that includes a consultation, shape, colour and follow-up blow-wave for $139. SalonZBD is located at 237 Kilmore Street in the central city. To make an appointment, phone 379 5782. Go to www.zbd.co.nz

A YOUTHFUL TRANSFORMATION Have you noticed the difference in the youthful glow of a healthy, young person's skin compared to the skin of an elderly person? As we age, we are exposed to many extrinsic factors such as stress, pollution, the environment and our own lifestyle choices, plus we have our own intrinsic aging going on. These factors all affect our skin.

T

o achieve a more youthful glow, Dermapen™ has been recognised as being at the forefront of antiaging in the skin rejuvenation field. Dermapen™ treatments increase the skin's elasticity, health and overall youthfulness by minimising the appearance of large pores, reducing acne scarring and causing skin rejuvenation to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It does this by causing microscopic punctures in the skin - the skin is numbed prior to starting the Dermapen™ treatment.

The resulting micro-channels in the skin stimulate the natural healing process of the body, producing new collagen to repair the treated skin. Straight after a treatment, while the micro-channels are still in the dermis, is the ideal time to infuse the skin with hyaluronic acid for added hydration and the maximum anti-aging, skin rejuvenation effect. To further enhance the anti-aging benefits of the Dermapen™ treatment, the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic adds in a red LED light treatment. The benefits of red LED light were initially discovered by NASA for healing wounds by boosting circulation and stimulating collagen and elastin production. If you want youthful, firm, luminous skin the combination of a Dermapen™ treatment, hyaluronic acid infusion and red LED light is the answer! AUTUMN: WORK IT By Rachel Smith

Dark yellows and oranges, rich greens and blues - these are just some of the hot colours for the new season's fashion.

T

he change of season is a time for versatility, with an array of colours, fabrics and styles to choose from. Earthy neutrals work well for men and women, with blues, dark grey, browns, and greens in olive and sage, all perfect for the unisex colour palette. Hues are taken a step further too - deep wine and dark orange and yellows that verge on mustard, with tops and dresses combining colours for stand-out pieces. Try lighter shades of bright white and soft cream in oversized chunky knits and jackets, or the soft silhouette of long owing pants or culottes. Mix colours from opposite sides of the spectrum by adding teal, amethyst and soft pastel pinks. Look for dresses - either long or just above the knee in mixed shades, contrasting tops and bottoms, or simply play around with your own favourites by adding accessories and layers. Staying with the season are the year-long favourites - the timelessness of black, bright and bold shades including classic red, and the shimmering metallics of silver, gold and copper. Whatever your choice, shop around, and enjoy the experience of adding extra warmth to your wardrobe.

MODERN HAVEN FOR HAIR It takes a great team to pull off a big change – a new name and a new look for a local hair salon.

W

hen Tanya Brown became owner of Cheeky Browns Hairdressing in St Martins late last year, there was more than just the name of the salon to decide. That part was easy - the same name as her previous purpose built salon based at her own home - a mix of her own name and a legacy to her father. “From my idea of a plywood interior, we came up with a full re-design,” Tanya says. “With the interior fit-out design created during the process by John Garlick Builders, walls were moved and a new look and feel was created, with touches of black contrasting against the natural tones, and then great exterior landscaping.” While construction was underway, the building team directed clients to Tanya's home, where she and previous salon

owner, Celes, continued to deliver ontrend cuts at competitive pricing until the grand opening. Celes is still a key member of the team at Cheeky Browns, providing great styles to her wide-range of clients from children to parents and grandparents. Fully qualified hairdresser, Regan, is back with new barbering skills, as well as fabulous cuts and colours, while Tanya combines her nearly 30 years of hairdressing experience with that of fresh ideas from apprentice, Alex. veneering

O

ne approach that is frequently used to restore teeth to their natural beauty is bonded ceramics. Porcelain veneering is one of the most conservative and effective ways to significantly change the appearance of a tooth, and is used in instances where there are spaces between front teeth, discolorations, unsightly old fillings or rotations. By placing one of these very thin (about 0.5mm thick) ceramic facings on a tooth, it can be re-shaped, re-coloured, and even appear to be re-positioned, resulting in a very significant change in appearance. To place a veneer, a small amount of enamel must usually be removed from the visible surfaces of the tooth or teeth to be treated. The veneer is custom-made at a laboratory in the shape and colour planned. Temporary veneers are worn during this time (usually about a week), to maintain comfort and appearance. At a second appointment, new veneers are tried and closely examined for fit and appearance before being bonded to the teeth one at a time. Veneers generally last many, many years and require no special maintenance other than that required by untouched teeth. David has been placing veneers for over 25 years and can answer any questions you may have. To find out what may be possible for you, phone 355 8297 and maybe you can have the smile you've always wanted!

No doubt after all the shouting and clapping and generally great hijinks, many children will be feeling rather hungry. Well, there is no excuse for leaving South City with a grumbling tummy, when the best food court in town is right in the heart of the centre offering choices to suit all tastes. There's Pita Pit which extols the virtues of fresh thinking and healthy eating. Its plain, wholemeal or glutenfree pita bread is filled with a choice of the meats children love (or vegetables), along with sauce, a spread and cheese. It's quality, healthy, fresh food – fast! Sushi has become an incredibly popular cuisine and it certainly can be made kid-friendly. Both Sushitime and St Pierre's Sushi offer extremely attractive and delicious varieties of sushi that could help to broaden your child's nutrition intake. Yoghurt Story is another enticing food outlet at South City with its wonderful range of frozen yoghurts and over 50 different toppings to go with them. The store is bright and

colourful with its displays of fresh fruits and fruit salads at its Green Stop fresh fruit smoothie and juice bar. Japanz Bakery has an extensive selection of New Zealand favourites along with a mix of Japanese and Asian delicacies. Everything on sale here is baked fresh onsite the good old-fashioned way with all-natural ingredients. But the choices don't end there. Perhaps Chop N Wok Chinese may appeal, or Aashiana with its flavours of India. Perhaps Mediterranean Taste with its pasta, salads and souvlaki will win the day to assuage those hunger pangs, or will it be McDonalds? Whatever the final choice, the food can all be enjoyed in the comfort of the food court's eating area right beside the indoor children's playground. School holidays are a great time to get your hair styled by the talented team at Haircuts for Haircuts so pop in to see owner Michelle and her creative crew for a new look.

On point When you think about ballet

classes it may well conjure up

images of yesteryear – you or your little ones prancing around in a leotard learning how to plié and pirouette. But actually, it's well worth shifting that perception to the 'you of today'.

F

lexing and flinging (gracefully, of course) your body around does wonders for the physique. If long, lithe limbs are what your heart desires, then adult ballet classes might be just what you are looking for. We've tried and tested out the concept ourselves, and can say with surety, that you will find classes a brilliant challenge. And never fear that you will be on your lonesome as you reignite those childhood dreams of becoming a prima-ballerina, adult dance classes – across many genres in fact – are wildly popular. Perhaps it really is the prospect of being able to don some very cute knitwear and slippers that creates the allure, but it's probably more about it representing an opportunity to throw caution (and coordination) to the wind, not worrying about how you look when gliding across the floor. It's a wonderful opportunity to get together with friends and meet new faces, with classes designed to be interactive and sociable. There are ballet classes for adults held all over Canterbury so invest in some 'you' time and sashay along for the experience.

RECREATION An extraordinary season of musical theatre

Showbiz Christchurch has a long history of staging world-class musicals and 2016 is the biggest year yet for the 80-year-old organisation.

THE SHOWSTOPPERS STEALING HEARTS The season begins with global entertainment phenomenon, Mamma Mia! New Zealand is currently the only country Mamma Mia! is being staged in within the Southern Hemisphere for 2016, Showbiz Christchurch General Manager Michael Bayly says. “Mamma Mia! is one of the most successful musicals in the world and has been seen by over 60 million people in over 400 major cities – we are delighted to have secured the rights to this wonderful production.” Showbiz Christchurch burst back onto the scene after the Isaac Theatre Royal

reopened last year. The first major musical staged following its $40m rebuild was the Phantom of the Opera, which was a sell-out success. “Over 24,000 Cantabrians attended the show and hundreds missed out due to leaving booking too late. People are flocking back to the theatre this year, and Mamma Mia! is also selling very fast.” In 1999, the original West End production of Mamma Mia! had its first audience in London. It set the record for premiering in more cities worldwide faster than any other musical in history and is now celebrating 16 years of entertaining audiences all over the

globe. Making it an extraordinary season of musical theatre and continuing the theme of taking audiences back through the decades, the production will be followed by two more major musicals, Hairspray and Evita. Season Dates: Mamma Mia! – 31 March 16 April; Hairspray 8 - 18 June; Evita 15 September - 1 October. Evening performances at 7.30pm, Matinees at 2pm Saturday and 4pm Sunday. RECREATION

By Rachel Smith

Recreation goes hand-inhand with New Zealand's reputation and it's not hard to see why. We have access to a 'backyard' that spans many miles of fertile forest, natural springs, stunning flora and fauna, and natural playgrounds. Needless to say, we are one spoilt nation!

hile many of us have grown up with a 'silver spoon' in our mouths when it comes to the abundance of recreational treasures at our disposal, it'd be fair to say we might have become a little lax at taking full advantage (in a positive sense) of what our amazing country has to offer. Take Christchurch for example – there are so many ins and outs to explore that may not even be on our radar. The Christchurch Walks & Other Free Family Fun website is designed to be 'in the know' about experiences up for grabs. “When you set off on an outing with young children, it can be helpful to have a

plan” says founder Vanessa Roberts. “For example, attempting to do a spot of orienteering can quickly turn to custard if the shop that sells the maps has closed and you can't find the starting pole.” The Christchurch Walks’ Facebook page also details the many fun and varied free family events and activities that take place in the region during the year. “Christchurch is a fantastic city and it's great to help families to make the most of what's out there,” Vanessa says. SAVOURY CUPS STEAL THE SHOW I created a garlic, ricotta and vanilla custard that is surprisingly easy to make. Delicate and savoury, this custard can be made ahead of time and is sublime paired with a glass of creamy Champagne - Natasha MacAller, author of Vanilla Table.

Caramelised Garlic and Ricotta Custard Cups Serves 6 INGREDIENTS: Caramelised garlic Garlic head, recipe needs 6 caramelised cloves 2 tsp oil Custard cups 1 tsp of butter to grease cups 1 vanilla pod 1 Tbsp applesauce or 1/4 apple, peeled and grated 1 cup of milk 1/2 tsp super ne sugar 1/2 tsp ne sea salt 1/2 tsp white pepper 3 large eggs 1/2 cup ricotta 1/4 cup of nely grated parmesan Salt and pepper to taste A pinch of ground nutmeg Caramelised garlic Preheat oven to 325°F/180°C. Cut top o garlic head to expose cloves. Peel away just the outer layer of the garlic bulb skin, leaving the skins of the individual cloves. Wrap loosely

Photo: Manja Wachsmuth/Natasha MacAller in foil and drizzle over the oil. Pinch the foil closed at the top, place in a baking pan and cook in oven 30-35 minutes until squishy, caramelised and golden brown. Custard cups Butter 6 small (4 oz/120 ml) custard cups. Set inside a baking dish large enough to hold

the cups. Cut the vanilla pod in half, but don't split and scrape it, to keep the custard ivory coloured. Squeeze 6 caramelised garlic cloves into a saucepan and add applesauce, vanilla pod, cream, milk, sugar, salt and pepper. Bring just to a simmer, turn o heat and cool about 20 minutes. Turn the oven to 325°F/160°C. In a large jug, whisk the eggs well then add ricotta. Place a sieve over the jug and strain the milk mixture into the eggs, pressing the garlic through with the back of a spoon. Discard the vanilla pod or rinse, dry and save for another use. Add parmesan salt, pepper, a pinch of nutmeg and whisk together. Pour custard into cups. Lift pan into the oven, then ll with very hot water to come halfway up the outside of the cups. Bake for 20 minutes until custard has browned and set, but is still jiggly in the centre. Serve warm as is, or top with a spoonful of green pea pesto.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Combining fresh, local ingredients with the perfect balance of chilli, spice and sweetness, is the foundation of home-based business, Jen's Cozinha.

O

riginally from Goa in India, Jennifer Viegas uses traditional family recipes to produce her range of homemade artisan pickles and chutneys. Goan cuisine is a blend of India and Portugal, and Jen's Cozinha (Portuguese for kitchen) is quickly becoming a well-known brand across the country. Jennifer started the company three years ago from her own commercial kitchen at home. “I use my mother's recipes, so it's quite special,” she says. “Goan cuisine is mostly coconutbased, which adds a lovely sweetness.” She also runs cooking demonstrations from home for groups of people wanting to learn how to cook the traditional cuisine. “In India, pickles are eaten almost every day with your meal. The ingredients I use are fresh from growers' markets and the spices are high-grade. “My pickles are very versatile and I get so much positive feedback from customers who tell me it's the best they've ever tasted. This gives me great satisfaction and confidence.” Jennifer won a Cuisine Artisan Award for her 'Prawn Balchao Pickle' in 2015, and says the 'Chilli Pickle' is also a number one seller. “People can be apprehensive to try the chilli, but it's very popular – hot, sweet and delicious!” The range also includes Aubergine Pickle, Mango Chutney, Lemon Chutney and Mixed Vegetable Pickle. “I'm always thinking about adding to the range. As the business evolves, ideas keep coming.”

Raising awareness about high-quality, well-balanced Japanese food has long been a dream for Megumi Wilson.

Now with the help of her brother, Megumi has launched her own Yoshimura - albeit on a smaller scale - in Christchurch. “We specialise in sushi, bento boxes and Japanese curries,” Megumi says. “I studied nutrition at university and want my Kiwi customers to enjoy healthy Japanese dishes, as well as contemporary sushi. Our bento boxes contain not only chicken, salmon or prawns, but also delicious home-made salads and seasonal fruit.” Yoshimura's menu is indeed tempting

with teriyaki chicken sushi and crispy chicken sushi, the latter made with Megumi's very own recipe. There's also marinated salmon sushi in soy dipping sauce and a variety of healthy and attractive vegetable sushi. Quintessentially Japanese is the deep-fried karaage chicken sushi – a technique similar to the preparation of tempura and nigiri sushi - a specific type of sushi consisting of a slice of raw fish over pressed vinegared rice. You may be surprised to know that curry is one of the most popular dishes in Japan. Yoshimura offers a selection of these mildly spicy dishes including potato cake curry; vegetable curry; deep fried chicken

TANTALISING TASTEBUDS Bluff Oysters are an iconic New Zealand food that spoil the senses. A seasonal specialty, it would be fair to say they create a frenzy of excitement amongst oyster-lovers who are after a taste of something delicious.

F

ortunately for Christchurch this Bluff Oyster Season (March to June), the equally iconic Merivale Gourmet Seafood is feeling as ambitious as ever when it comes to satisfying the masses. Owner and operator Ivana Youn says the team works hard to partner with a number of suppliers to keep the delicious produce rolling in. “I think a lot of people head in to the supermarkets hoping they will always have them in stock, but many don't have enough stock to keep up with the demand! “We take pride in partnering with the suppliers that have the best possible produce. My partner, who also works in the business, used to work in a supermarket seafood department and has a great knowledge about the best ones to go for.” A lover of oysters herself, Ivana too knows the importance of sourcing and offering a premium product. “We offer our oysters by the dozen fresh in a pottle and we also offer them in a light batter. Getting the batter right is absolutely essential so you don't lose the flavour of the oyster.” To peruse the delicious selection of Merivale Gourmet Seafood produce including Bluff Oysters, visit the team at 233 Papanui Road, Merivale, or phone 355 6733.

Enjoy tastes from its extensive menu, from brunch through to evening dining. There is something for everyone - think avocado smash with poached eggs served on lightly toasted brioche, with cream cheese and bacon, or smoked salmon for brunch. Chollo from Honduras, with notes of sweet, juicy, red apple and plums, and natural sugarcane sweetness. “The whole point is to have it as is – to appreciate it for what it is,” James says. “It's about keeping the coffee simple whether it is a hot or iced espresso, a cold brew or filter, as well as Kiwi favourites, the latte and flat white.” Little Merchants makes great, simple food to go with its coffee – fresh wraps, sandwiches and salads supplied by Café Lumes, sweet treats from Pure Café, and toast with a range of tasty toppings. Visit Little Merchants on Facebook and Instagram, or pop in for a new coffee taste at 18 Bernard Street, Addington.

EMBRACING JUXTAPOSITION It's a quite an art transforming a house into a home. This is especially the case in a post-quake city such as ours where many farewell decades of family history and roll out the welcome mat for pristine new builds. By Majka Kaiser

triking the balance between old and new, and guarding against the generic 'show home' look takes some work. With a few helpful guidelines, you too can create a retreat from the world that is modern yet pays homage to history and reflects your unique Various elements in different styles have been used here to create a balanced, cohesive and characterful living space. personal style. The ultimate interior design trap to avoid is furnishing your home entirely with the same style of furniture. For example, if you have a particular penchant for 18th century antique furniture, then exercising some restraint will help to prevent your home looking like a Jane Austin film set. Instead, consider mixing and matching

different eras of furniture – although, don't mix things up too much, or you may find your space resembles a chaotic junk shop. Instead, use accent pieces that juxtapose with pieces from other eras. Whether it's a cutting-edge contemporary design, ornate French antiques or mid-century retro; curating a careful mix of these looks will infuse your home with style, character and charm, no matter how new it is.

PLANT PERFECTION

By Kate Pierson

Whether you consider yourself an amateur or Mother Nature incarnate, plant perfection is yours for the taking this autumn.

F

rom Aloe to Spider Plants, Anthuriums to Peace Lilies, there are more options for your home than you can shake a stick at. A bold or subtle statement to light up your environment, indoor plants can provide a splash of warmth and vibrancy to a room dressed with neutrals, or add even more energy to a room that embraces a kaleidoscope of colours. Experiment with a row of contrasting indoor plants along your window-sills, or build planter boxes onto your wall for a look that is outside the square. A tall, elegant plant looks divine against a plain backdrop – even better if it's a brick one. Sharpen your décor up with a sizeable cactus and in the same room, pair this organic look with a geometric rug; roughened-up leather couch in chocolate brown; a wooden chair dressed in a sheep rug; candles in old jars. Get the drift? If you work from home, dress up your desk area with some plants – they'll be your saving grace on days when you hit a lull and need a bit of colour in your life.

Don't be bashful when it comes to seeking advice on what will work best in the room you'd like to dress up – an interior designer or garden centre will have infinite wisdom on what will work and what won't.

If you work from home, dress up your desk area with some plants.

here's a trend that's been rearing its head for some time now – the stag head, or 'deer décor' as it's been dubbed. From faux taxidermy to the cardboard kind, the stag is a stylistic sensation for sure. Hand-in-hand with the type of interior design that promotes earthy tones, rustic and organic fixtures and furnishings, and a nod to all of the wonders of Mother Nature; deer décor is the 'go to' look for a bare wall that needs a strong statement piece. You can have the full shebang, or just go for the antlers. Shop around to score the most cost-effective interpretation of this trend. Judging by its ongoing popularity, it shows no sign of dropping off the style radar any time soon.

PUNCHY PATTERNS

By Majka Kaiser

Mixing and matching patterns can often be challenging, but with these helpful hints you will soon welcome them into your home with confidence.

D

etermining your colour palette is the first step when deciding what kind of patterns should grace your walls, window treatments, upholstery and other soft furnishings. Look to your existing furniture, art and textiles for guidance and inspiration, or scour the pages of interior design magazines and design blogs to see how they use patterns successfully. Choose colours that will complement or work effectively in contrast with what you already have and experiment from there. For example, furniture and other decorative elements in paler shades will look most striking against a backdrop of complementary hues or contrasting colours, and visa versa. Create balance when mixing and matching patterns by using a variety of scales. Large scale patterns can work well with smaller scale prints as long as they are within the same colour family. Choose a dominant print for a statement wall and then a more delicate print for accent textiles. The safest bet if you are not yet confident with colour matching is to combine a coloured pattern with white. As long as your furniture is in neutral colours, you have a great foundation from which you can then layer with less busy patterns like stripes or polka dots in your soft furnishings. Bear in mind that when mixing patterns of similar hues, they need to be either warm or cool tones to create harmony instead of dissonance.

BULBS - PLANT AND PLAN AHEAD Note to self from last spring – “Plant more, lots more, bulbs next autumn”.

W

hen the first daffodils appear in late August, we all wish we'd been more proactive. Spring bulbs are unbeatable for colour, picking, and in many cases, a strong scent. Mostly importantly, they are unbeatable for lifting our spirits after the long, cold months of winter. The key ingredients to success with bulbs are well-composted rich soil with reasonable drainage, regular feeding, and leaving the foliage to die right down after flowering – this allows the bulbs to make enough food to store for both their long dormant season and the next season's flowering. Right now is the time to check out the huge range of spring bulbs at Terra Viva; not only does it stock large-grade top quality spring bulbs, but it has the biggest range you'll find

ble nbeata u e r a bulbs its Spring ur spir o g in for lift old long, c e h t r afte inter. s of w h t n o m

and it's right at the peak of the biggest choice. Anemones (8 varieties), Ranunculas (7 varieties), Daffodils (33 varieties), Tulips (31 varieties), Scented Hyacinths (10 varieties), plus Freesias, Bluebells, Grape Hyacinths, Dutch Iris and Iris Reticulata among others. The best places for bulbs? Nearly all of them love sun at some part of the day, but they love growing in amongst trees (which generally have no leaves on when the bulbs are flowering), or in the garden itself (planting these into bulb baskets saves digging them up in the dormant season), or, of course, in pots. Feeding? Use the special bulb food with its extra calcium to promote maximum flowering and feed in both autumn and spring.

I try to offer the best service and use my sales knowledge and passion for detail to achieve the best outcome in home selling. “Preparing a property for sale is so important everything needs to look good, smell good and be a pleasure to walk into. “One of my concerns is from a dog-owner point of view. I think it is important that sellers who are pet owners know how to cope with animals during the marketing of the property, open homes and moving - it can be an anxious period for pets too.” Milena also recommends an exterior appraisal of the property to maximise lawns and gardens, and to promote odourless interiors with less disruption, as well as minimising the signs of their presence; after all, not all house-hunters are animal lovers. Milena is excited about her new career change and has a clear understanding of the selling process to explain to clients. “At the moment it is a sellers' market, good properties are scarce. I recommend house-hunters work closely with an agent wherever possible. I try and listen to their needs so I can try to find the right property match and look beyond their recommendations.” You can phone Milena on 027 917 5191 or email her at milena.bartlett@harcourts.co.nz

NATURAL AESTHETICS Combining ancient technology with modern construction practices is challenging at the best of times. This is due to many of the old construction practices not being suited to current engineering strategies and today's style of architecture.

he new, natural, material range at Rockcote draws inspiration from nature to provide beautiful interior and exterior finishes that are both health-conscious and environmentally friendly. With increasing awareness of eco-building techniques, and the desire to make our homes healthier, the benefits of using traditional natural renders and paints are worth considering both at home and work. “Product is made up of natural clay materials and natural limes combined with ancient skills and building practices to create unique, appealing, natural interior,” Manager Mike Olds explains. “The breathable renders and finishes can be used on a wide variety of wall surfaces, including plaster, and over a range of prepared substrates including new or existing brickwork; cement sheeting; plasterboard; even concrete surfaces, with stunning results.” The range of decorative finishes creates limitless possibilities

CITY LIVING

F

rom an architectural perspective, apartment living is about blending the convenience of central amenities with the expectations of a typical suburban home. Bringing the two together can be a challenge. With a high level of off-site amenity comes another layer of complexities - the most notable being a 'compromised' form of privacy, as with apartment living comes shared spaces. In their simplest form they are corridors, stairwells and elevators, yet can be as functional and large as laundries, storage areas, gyms, pools and the proximity of neighbours. These are spaces that see residents cross paths, interact and engage with one another on a daily basis. A level of social

As the designer of The Verve Apartments on Peterborough Street, architect Cymon Allfrey explains why our thinking needs to change when it comes to inner city living. interaction not seen in suburbia and one that Kiwis seem yet to embrace. I question why it is that overseas these larger communal areas and facilities are an everyday expectation in such buildings, yet in our local market there is still the perception that apartment living should be a condensed version of a suburban home. We need to learn to live differently in order to embrace this evolution of living. Consider how we live during the summer at the holiday home. The degree of amenity that we require changes, as our needs are more closely related to entertaining and relaxed day-to-day living, rather than gardening, home maintenance and domestic storage needs. We live and function with simple efficiency. That is not

to say that we don't require the luxurious touches of high-end living, but that as our living environment changes - as long as our biological needs are met - we are able to live and function efficiently, often within a confined space. We need to apply this ability to adapt, in order to allow us to successfully occupy the city. By doing so, we will be more able to successfully embrace this collective style of living rather than squish the quarter acre Kiwi dream into a multi-storey building. A Liveable City, the residential chapter of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan, puts forward visions and objectives for central city living. It recognises that 'successful cities need attractive central

city neighbourhoods, with diverse communities to support business growth and development, and bring life to the city centre'. Put simply, a vibrant and busy central city needs the support of people living there. Pre-quake, there had been a real drive to bring people into Christchurch city, energising our central area through people. Five years on, the amenities of our city are back and we are now moving into a new phase of development and recovery, as inner-city living emerges once again. Developments such as the Margaret Mahy Playground; the re-establishment of art galleries; shops; restaurants and the desirability of close proximity to Hagley Park, all encourage central living. And also oer a range of enjoyment and amenity not found in suburbia.

TREND FORECASTING: YOUR HOME

When it comes to home decorating, current trends are many and varied. From digital-free living rooms to elaborate bathrooms, here are five trends that are predicted to be big this year.

Modern, matte appliances Black stainless steel is set to become the new ‘steel of choice’ when it comes to kitchen appliances. The upcoming trend offers a softer and sleeker alternative to the industrial look of conventional stainless steel. Matte and modern, the smudge and fingerprint resistance factor is a welcome point of difference. Tech-less living rooms With so much screen time during the day, more families are opting for unplugged family rooms. Digital-free living rooms can look really smart. Instead of placing a large TV as the focal point, how about arranging furniture to put the fireplace centre stage instead? Sustainability remains King This year is about handmade products, furnishings and art. People are caring more and more about where the items in their home come from, and are mixing new sustainable with old upcycled materials. Shades of grey Grey is a big colour trend for 2016 – especially deep gunmetal hues. Offering a calm and collected look, nothing is more chic than a dark grey room, enhanced with pops of accent colour to enliven things. Bigger bathrooms Turning the sterile, functional bathroom space into something more extravagant is now in vogue. Feature walls, graphic tiling and elaborate chandeliers make bathrooms feel more like luxe living spaces.

At REB our team of qualified builders, painters and plasterers is big enough to undertake any job, whilst still striving to retain a high level of personal care for all of our clients.

here is always some version of gold, silver, bronze or copper ontrend at any given moment. While copper became the metallic of choice in 2015, this year our affections may turn back to the timeless tones, gold and silver. With that said, the flexibility to 'mix and match' is what sets the trend apart this year – so don't be afraid to make one type of metal dominant in your home while using other types for a smaller accent role. Gold tones and brass warm up a space, while reflective colours like silver bounce light around a room.

MAGIC METALLIC

Using a few well-chosen pieces – even a lampshade for a pop - creates an elegant and affluent look. When incorporating metallic into your décor, it's important to remember there is an art to striking the right balance. A good tip to keep in mind is that mixing metallics with natural elements softens the metals and keeps them from looking overdone. Metals look gorgeous with natural fibres, like wood, and create a wonderful balance. The best way to choose the right metallic for your home is to buy what you love. Don't buy something just because it's 'on trend'. Go with what you really love, and you'll avoid disappointment.

Bold baths By Kate Pierson

'Tis the season to start getting cosy. The cooler temperatures are the perfect excuse to pick some 'completely justifiable' (cough, cough) fixtures for your abode that up your aesthetic game.

T

ake a bold bath as an apt example – it's a practicality, sure, but in equal measure, it's that beautiful statement your tired bathroom has been begging for. In this issue, we've already shared our fixation on metallic for this season with you, and this is certainly a trend you can warm up to when tarting up your tub. Think a grand, free-standing copper bath in an otherwise fairly neutral space. There are many shops online and in the bricksand-mortar realms that will spoil you for choice when it comes to free-standing baths, with the freedom to have feet or flat to the floor. While minimalists may prefer straight or curvaceous lines, the feet are where you can really make a statement – check out our example for major bathtub envy.

Driving the dream Audi R8 By Nicholas Henare

There is a new contender in the ring and it's ready to clash with the big boys. The all-new Audi R8 V10 Plus.

T

he arrival of the new R8 coincides with the launch of Audi Sport as a brand within a brand for Audi internationally. The motorsport heritage of the four rings is nothing short of legendary, so let's say it certainly piqued my interest. I was fortunate enough to take a quick look and an even quicker drive before the official launch in New Zealand at the end of March, courtesy of Archibalds Audi. The new R8 features a huge soundtrack, exceptional driving technology, and class-leading LED laser headlights taken directly from its Le Mans race cars. Billed as the most powerful and fastest production Audi yet, this vehicle isn't just good on the eye; it lives up to the brief. Putting it through its paces was fun work. Going fast is one thing, but the huge ceramic brakes make stopping equally as impressive.

This vehicle isn't just good on the eye; it lives up to the brief. Audi claims it is the closest thing to a race car it's ever built for the road and it certainly feels like it. The supple leather interior, trimmed in brushed aluminium and matte carbon fibre is clean and uncluttered. The shape, the feel and even the smell of the interior is a highlight of the experience and the refinement is second-to-none; definitely not a bad place to be for the morning commute. Its solid feel in cornering; its speed; its refinement and its damn right sex appeal make it a beast of a car to drive. I made some good friends in fellow motor aficionados and our love of style, power and speed were most definitely satiated

by the R8. Yes, it has the ability on the track, but it would also be a pleasure to drive on the Christchurch roads on a day-to-day basis. I would love to wake each day with the anticipation of driving it. When you see it, you'll appreciate its grace. Audi set out to raise the bar with the new R8 and it looks as if it's completely changed the game. Whether you're an aspiring racer or an everyday driver, it's as simple as adjusting your seat, buckling in, pushing the start button and you're off. A dream to drive, a dream to look at, but a very real machine. Metropol March 24, 2016 77

can tell you first-hand, having put it through the toughest of tests during a few swift laps at Hampton Downs race track, that it certainly brings the noise. A casual glance could fool you into thinking it's a souped-up family hauler, but take a closer look and you will find it's miles beyond your expectations in this range. It's incredibly fast. Speeds approaching 200km/h before hard braking, then laser accuracy through a sweeping corner, is not something you

expect from a car of this size. You won't be doing that on your trip to Tekapo, but isn't it good to know that, if needed, this type of handling is at your fingertips? According to Dean Sheed, Audi New Zealand General Manager, “New Zealanders' love of Audi Sport Models and passion for performance has seen us achieve the number one position for percentage of R and RS sales worldwide.” With models tailored for every driver across the Audi Sport range, it's easy to see why.

Sleek lines, a monstrous engine, refined driving, and an extensive options list, make this a feast for the senses. It looks sleek and refined for a “station wagon”, but underneath, like Clark Kent, it's a 'Superman' of a vehicle. The hardest thing with this car is we don't have enough road to flex its muscles. But if its comfort, power and style that you're after every day, it's got to be the Audi RS 6 Performance. Head in to Archibalds on Tuam Street to experience it for yourself.
